Crop Circles -- Music in the Fields 2006© Mahalah Rood

“It’s all in the Seeing and not just the Looking… When the new wave of Crop Circles appeared in the 1980’s they were simple variations of circles carefully placed in grain fields. As interest grew by observers, researchers and farmers, so did the complexity of the Crop Circles and their placements in fields. At times it seemed that formations would attempt to reflect current thinking about their origins; and then in the next season exceed prior speculations and the formations took off to a different level of complexity. This morphing suggests some form of intelligent/sentient interface, plug-in or monitoring of humans’ reactions to the crop formations! While many formations appear ‘decorative’, do they contain hidden messages placed by the unknown creators?

While many of the crop formations are incredibly beautiful geometric creations, the simplest grouping of circles yield an interesting geometric story according to Dr. Gerald S. Hawkins former chairman of astronomy at Boston University. Inspired by the book Circular Evidence which presented an extensive report of crop circles in the UK from 1978-1988 Hawkins performed serious mathematical analyses and hidden ratios emerged that relate to the white keys on the piano!

Most of these crop formations were simple groups of circles in the fields. Dr. Hawkins noticed that the circles were presented in certain

proportions which lead to the above Euclidean geometry theorems. The theorems revealed that the crop formations were laid out in such a way to present the diatonic ratio/ scale corresponding to Middle C on the piano keyboard.

So then what type of hoaxer can compose music in circles of wheat? Or is there some sort of unidentified intelligence attempting communication in a scale according to our current technological level?

We now have an abundance of airplanes, helicopters, satellites: cameras on long poles, electromagnetic meters, camcorders, phone networks and television coverage to discover and broadcast these messages
around the globe.

Humanity’s vision is vast, but is our consciousness still too narrow to understand the significance of the Music in the Fields?

As an artist I’m not so interested in identifying all details of crop circles through the scientific method or trying to dismiss the whole phenomenon with an “It’s all done by hoaxers” theory. There are hidden messages and as these messages are revealed I allow them to inspire my art. And that is what art is all about—to travel where science and journalism fear to tread.

In the course of writing this essay I contacted two musicians, one a jazz pianist and the other a guitarist, and asked them what they thought of Hawkins’ discoveries and they immediately recognize a similarity to a musical scale that is not used as much because it can cause too much feed back in electronic sound equipment. So can this be a case of our technology blindsiding us from a fresh view of music and harmonics? Only time, genuine research
and creative experimentation will tell.
